Mitchell Zephier began making jewelry in 1977 when he was in a high school exchange program in Vermont, where he learned form Frank Standing High, a high school art teacher and master traditional craftsman, and a Zuni jeweler, who taught Mitchell to work with silver and to inlay stones. He worked on his jewelry for many years with his late brother, Roger Herron, who helped with the cutting of metal, and his friend Belle Starboy, who does the engraving and inlay work. Together they created unique jewelry in German silver and brass that incorporates designs from the Plains cultures.
