Price: $1,600.00
Item Number: JLAKMC18
This life-sized paddle by Jerry Laktonen is his interpretation of  Alutiiq ceremonial paddles found in the British Museum collection.  He used the shape and colors of these paddles, as well as some design elements, such as silhouettes of sea mammals and geometric designs.

Speaking about his paddles, Jerry says, "The Alutiiq hunter's most prized (and essential) personal possession was his paddle. In a world where virtually all travel was done by water, the paddle was with him for all of his essential functions as hunting, fishing, socializing and long distance travel. Along with drum, whistles rattles and masks it also had ceremonial purpose. The ceremonial paddle (painted with fish and sea mammals as well as geometric design) was witnessed as being used in ceremonies or plays...."
