The Mudheads, or Koyemsi, are considered to be clowns of which can play a varitey of roles; the common roles are as interlocutors between katsinas and humans, announcing impending events, translating requests, and giving directions. They are often seen as both entertaining and watching over the audience and dancers, to be sure all is in order.  They are thought to have originated at the Zuni Pueblo, and versions of them are found in all of the Pueblos.  This mudhead is carrying flat dolls and toys and appears friendly to both children and adults alike.
