Item Number: ATP0556

Llama effigy pot with painted mimbres geometric designs.. Michael Kanteena is noted for pottery creations that reflect ancient cultures, predominantly of the southwest.

Michael recreates the look and feel of ancient pottery and has become particularly noted for his revival of figurative pottery. Using traditional hand building techniques, he creates his vessels or animal/human figures from clay, paints designs on with mineral slip paints and fires them. After this initial firing process, he then ‘ages’ his pottery and re-fires the pieces in order to capture the historic look and feel to them.

His art and building with clay began with his desire to learn more about his own culture which has roots leading back to New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon and the Anasazi peoples. He began collecting archaeological catalogues of pottery forms and continued with extensive study of the forms, trial and error in working with clay and consultation with archaeologists. Michael has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art and has won numerous awards for his pottery.

His clay birds, frogs, deer, goats and other animals, as well as his clay katsina figures, capture a moment in time and represent past cultures in the contemporary world today.
