From 1994 to 2001, Chester Kahn, a highly respected Navajo jeweler and painter, created a series of murals on the walls of the Ellis Tanner Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico. They depict prominent Navajos of the twentieth century, ranging from nationally recognized traditional and contemporary artists, to lawyers, scholars, educators, tribal leaders, athletes, musicians and scientists. The individuals represented show the determination of the Navajos to excel in their disciplines while keeping a strong sense of cultural affiliation and pride.

When the murals were finished, Ellis Tanner founded the Circle of Light Navajo Educational Project, to encourage Navajo youth to take pride in their culture, language, history and traditions. This book reproduces all of the murals, with information on each person depicted, as well as facts about Navajo history and culture in the form of questions aimed at stimulating interest in this subject, making it particularly useful for teachers.
