Price: $195.00
Item Number: PUHWV025

Navajo potter Westley Begaye has handmade this charming clay wedding vase with fine line, geometric designs adorned with vibrant paints.

This distinctive wedding vase, with its two spouts joined by a handle, originated in the Pueblos of the Southwest as part of the marriage tradition. It is provided by the groom's family and used first in a ceremony a week or two before the wedding when both families come together to give the couple gifts and advice. The vase is filled with holy water and presented first to the bride, who drinks from one side, and then to the groom, who drinks from the other side. It is then passed around the room, with the men drinking from one side and the women from the other. The vase is used again at the wedding ceremony itself, and then presented to the new couple to cherish as a memento of this special moment.

Please note that these handmade pottery pieces are made as decoration, and that liquids can damage them. The wedding vase comes with a copy of "The Wedding Vase Story" as told by Santa Clara Pueblo potter Teresita Naranjo.
