Carved out of dark brown walnut wood, this bear cub is ambling on his way, perhaps in search of a tasty fish, acorn or berry.

A noted wood carver from the Eastern Cherokee Reservation, Davis Welch uses a variety of woods, including walnut, palona, cherry and buckeye. He captures the character of animals such as bears, cats, owls, hummingbirds, wild boars and weasels, some of which appear to be in motion, ready to "dart off."
