Figures inspired by the petroglyphs seen around the Southwest, surrounded by dots of brightly colored stones, dance across the sides of this enchanting sterling silver box by L. Bruce Hodgins.  Decorated with stampwork, the figures have been overlaid onto the box, giving it depth, and the stones are set in raised bezels, scattered around as though they are stars in the night sky. The stones run the gamut of the rainbow - white moonstone, purple amethyst, red coral, reddish brown garnet, peach moonstone, orange amber, yellow citrine, bright green peridot, blue-green chrysophrase, light blue turquoise, blue denim lapis and black onyx. The top of the box has a large, domed cabochon of rutilated quartz shot through with golden filaments as a finial, set in a reposse design resembling an open flower.  The feet of the box are four fluted silver beads.

Bruce Hodgins' mother, Mary Hunt Dodge Hodgins, was related to the great Chee Dodge, the last official Head Chief of the Navajos, and first Tribal Chairman of the Navajo Tribe. His father worked as an educator and school principal at Hopi for 25 years, where Bruce learned to make jewelry from Hopi jeweler Sidney Secakuku.  Today Bruce is known for his clean, contemporary designs, impeccable work and use of unusual stones.

Height including feet and finial, 3 1/2", width 2 3/4"
