Runner katsinas appear at the spring dances at Hopi. They challenge men who are watching the dances to race across the plaza. If the man wins, he is given a prize, usually some piki bread. If he loses, there is some sort of punishment in store for him, such as having his face smeared with corn smut or being whipped with a yucca whip.
