Item Number: RGP0761
Santa Clara artist Freddy Bourdon made this whimsical cat in the black pottery technique. It would be a unique addition to any pottery collection.

To create the black pottery, red clay is prepared and molded before being fired in an oxygen reduction firing process, where the fire is smothered and the carbon rich smoke is trapped with the piece, which turns it permenently black.

Pottery from the Santa Clara Pueblo is created with the handmade coiling technique where clay coils are wedged together to form a shape. The pottery is coated with a slip and polished with very smooth stones to achieve the shiny and smooth look. Deep carved designs as well as fine etching/carving into the pot (sgraffito) are used. The same red clay and techniques are used for both the redware and the blackware with the blackness of the pottery being achieved by smothering the firing pit at the end of the firing process.

Height: 4.75"  Width: .75
