Santa Clara - Black Carved Pot with Swirl Pattern by Madeline Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo)

<< Previous in Pottery Next in Pottery >>
Price: $330.00
Item Number: RGP0705
This  black pot shows the qualities for which Madeline is known -- the clean, deep carving accentuating the design, and the contrast of the highly polished and matte black finishes.

Pottery from the Santa Clara Pueblo is created with the handmade coiling technique where clay coils are wedged together to form a shape. The pottery is coated with a slip and polished with very smooth stones to achieve the shiny and smooth look. Deep carved designs as well as fine etching/carving into the pot (sgraffito) are used. The same red clay and techniques are used for both the redware and the blackware with the blackness of the pottery being achieved by smothering the firing pit at the end of the firing process.
