Shirley Thompson has left the split ash splints in this fancy basket their natural color, and has contrasted it with green bands of braided sweetgrass gathered from local swampy areas. The sides and lid of the basket are decorated with alternating rows of intricate, twisted swirls. Baskets decorated with these twisted splints are what are known as fancy baskets in the Northeast.
