Originally brought to the Hopi by the Tewa speaking immigrants from the Rio Grande Pueblos in the early 18th century, the Koshares, also known as Koyalas, give exaggerated performances that are actually commentary on behavior that they consider to be improper, reinforcing Hopi mores and traditions. During their antics, they may bumble around doing actions backwards, or gorge themselves on food such as watermelon.
