Item Number: EMS001
Two bears are racing each other to the top of a hill in this delightful Kansas limestone sculpture by Eddie Morrison. Eddie leaves some of the surfaces in their natural state so that you can see the shell fossils in the stone.
Explaining his use of this fascinating material, Eddie says, "I started using Kansas limestone fenceposts after seeing the stone for the first time in Kansas. It... was formed millions of years ago by the sediments of the inland seas that once covered the Kansas landscape and has numerous shell forms in the stone which I like to incorporate in the pieces I create. ...The early day settlers of Kansas used it for various things. I have seen various figures carved into stones from the ancient Indigenous peoples who inhabited the land to graffiti by the early people to come to Kansas from the Old World. The early day settlers would cut posts out of the limestone to use for fenceposts in the 1800s, and the posts still cover acres and acres of many farms in Kansas. ...I just go with the natural lines and flow of the stone and let it suggest the image in the piece. I like to let the material I am using speak for itself."
Known for his sculpture in wood, stone and bronze, Eddie Morrison strives to produce work that represents American Indian people with pride and dignity. Attracted to its beautiful color variations, he often uses red cedar, allowing the gentle curves or unusual twists naturally found in the wood to appear in the finished pieces.
