This graceful Hano Mana Katsina by Gerald Quotskuyva is wrapped in an embroidered wedding robe under which is a traditional black dress tied around the waist by a woven sash. She is holding a basket in her hand and she is wearing an elaborate turquoise necklace. This doll is commonly carved to be given to young girls as their first or second gift during the katsina dances. Gerald's skill can be seen in the care with which he carved the folds and layers of her clothing.
Award winning carver Gerald Quotskuyva started carving to earn money for college, and is now known for his distinctive modern style. While the simplicity of his carvings' shapes echoes older style dolls, they have a sculptural quality that is uniquely his. He also produces paintings and giclee prints depicting Hopi themes.
