Ganado Rug by Gladys Kady (Navajo)
|
Item Number: BFR111
The center diamond of this bright, intricate Ganado rug woven by Gladys Kady features red cross-like design with a white center on a background of light gray. This, in turn, is set in a larger red diamond with a stepped inside and outside border in contrasting black in a lattice-like design. The corners each feature a red terraced triangle on gray, while the outermost border is black, with an inner white interlocked terrace design. The contrast of the dark red and black with the light gray and white emphasizes the complexity of the weaving.
Ganado rugs are considered the quintessential Navajo rugs. This style was developed with the influence and guidance of renowned trader Juan Lorenzo Hubble in the 1870s. He encouraged the weavers he bought rugs from to use natural colors, with the exception of the deep red that has become known as "Ganado red."
