Item Number: TRF0077

Bernard Homer, Jr. enjoys making frogs with a sense of humor.  This one is carved out of red variscite and has bulging mother of pearl and jet eyes. Bernard is the son of Bernard Homer, Sr., who learned to carve from his father in law, Leekya Deyuse. The frog is one of the water creatures (along with the turtle)  and is associated with fertility, life, water, continuation of life and crops. In prehistoric times frog carvings used for jewelry were commonplace. The frog is notably known as a rain-bringing fetish and associated with abundance and fertility.

Fetish carvings are made in numerous styles and materials and are representative of a vast array of animals and figures since artists and carvers have become more creative and varied. Carving fetishes has developed into one of the most collectible art forms of the Zuni Tribe today. Fetishes are still made and used in homes, for special purposes and religious ceremony. They originally came from the belief that when a stone resembled a certain animal, the power of that animal resided in the stone. Sometimes after finding such a stone, carving a bit of the stone to bring out more of the animal resemblance was done.
