Felt Applique Scarf with Beadwork - Raven and Salmon by Tammy Owens (Tlingit)

<< Previous in Alaskan Next in Alaskan >>
Price: $225.00
Item Number: TOMC05

Tlingit artist Tammy Owens has created this black felted wool scarf adorned with bright red raven and salmon motifs. The eyes are mother of pearl buttons, and Tammy has added black beadwork to the raven and salmon. Tammy has sewn the felt onto satin and tapered the neck of the scarf for wearability.

Tammy is Tlingit born, raised in Juneau, Alaska and is from the Eagle moiety and Killer Whale Clan with her family originating from the small Tlingit Village of Angoon, AK. Tammy taught herself how to bead and sew and learned the Northwest Coast form-line design from her father, Gene Chilton, a noted silver/goldsmith as well as Northwest wood carver. Gene Chilton has also been instrumental in years past of bringing the arts of other Tlingit and Alaska Native artists together in his Shop run in Juneau for many years and assisting The Indian Craft Shop with more representation of artists from this area.
Tammy has developed her skills as an expert blanket maker and designer today. Her designs are cut out by using an exacto knife in order to achieve the even and straight cuts and to have the felt lie straighter and flat. She uses Heavy Duty Heat Bond for adherence of the felt which helps prevent fraying and has the skills mastered that are necessary for this difficult work. On the very fine points of overlay, she will also secure with extra sewing stitches, tacking the points for extra security.

* Red & black eagle and bear scarf shown on model.
