Price: $650.00
Item Number: SFCK002

With distinctive black crow wings emerging from the side of her mask, this Crow Mother Katsina by Joe Gashweseoma is wearing a traditional, hand woven dress with a ceremonial white robe, and blue and red moccasins.  She appears during the Bean Dance, or Powamuya ceremony in February, when the Hopi prepare for the new growing season and initiate children into the Katsina Society.  She presides over the initiation, and is holding a bundle of yucca whips that the Whipper Katsinas use on the children who are being initiated. Later in the ceremony, she brings out a basket of sprouted corn. Crow Mother is considered by some Hopi to be the mother of all katsinas.
