In these striking clip earrings by Joe Piaso, Jr., triangular pieces of black and white snowflake obsidian are set off by a row of heavy gauge twisted silver wire. Joe, inspired to make jewelry by watching his grandfather, learned the art as a child at the Albuquerque Boarding School and by the age of 13 was selling his own work. Over 35 years later, he is now working with his son Lyle, passing on the family tradition.
Black obsidian, volcanic glass formed when molten lava cools quickly, sometimes appears with "snowflakes" that are whitish-gray splotches of radiating, needle-shaped quartz crystals.
