Carving - Whales, Bowhead - Ivory, by Charles Slwooko (Yupik) - SOLD

These graceful, diving bowhead whales by Charles Slwooko are made of walrus ivory, with inlaid baleen for eyes.  They are set on a slice of fossilized bone.

The bowhead, one of the  only three whale species to spend their whole life in Arctic waters, can stay underwater for up to 40 minutes.  Their massive bony skulls are able to break through ice up to 24 inches thick in order to breathe.
