The clean, graceful form of Lynn Quam's buffalos transmit both the strength of the animal and the beauty of the material from which it is made. This one is carved from petoskey stone. Petoskey stones contain fragments of a coral reef. When dry, the stone resembles ordinary limestone but when wet or polished using lapidary techniques, the distinctive mottled pattern of the six-sided coral fossils emerges. The eyes and horns of the buffalo have been inlaid with turquoise.
Lynn Quam and his wife, Navajo carver Jayne Quam, are both well respected carvers. Lynn is the grandson of Johnny Quam, an important carver from the early 20th century.
