Item Number: Z001226
Zuni artist, Della Haloo, has captured the essence of a mother bear and her young cub in Picasso Marble. The larger bear has an arrowhead bundle of red coral and turquoise, along with turquoise inlaid eyes. In her mouth, she is holding a fish made of shell and an inlaid turquoise eye. Standing at its mother's feet, the small cub appears to anticipate a fine fish meal. The cub carries a turquoise arrowhead bundle and has inlaid turquoise eyes. The arrowhead theme is carried through in this masterful piece as it is supported on a fish rock serpentine base shaped as an arrowhead.

Fetish carvings are made in numerous styles and materials and are representative of a vast array of animals and figures since artists and carvers have become more creative and varied. Carving fetishes has developed into one of the most collectible art forms of the Zuni Tribe today. Fetishes are still made and used in homes, for special purposes and religious ceremony. They originally came from the belief that when a stone resembled a certain animal, the power of that animal resided in the stone. Sometimes after finding such a stone, carving a bit of the stone to bring out more of the animal resemblance was done.
