Baskets made of baleen were first created by Alaska Natives at the beginning of the twentieth century. Baleen is the fibrous material from the mouths of the toothless whales that is used to filter plankton as they feed. This book, a Master's program thesis, gives cultural context, historical and formal development of baleen baskets as well as characteristics of these baskets.  Black and white photographs help the reader to understand the way of life as well as the weaving process.
