This fierce turquoise badger by Karen Zunie looks like it is about to challenge a larger adversary. Karen's attention to detail is clear in the fur and the sense of movement in its pose. She learned to carve when she started helping her ex-husband, Lance Cheama, polish his pieces.
The badger, the protective and healing fetish of the south that is associated with the color red, is believed to help find roots and plants used in healing. They are usually carved as close to the ground, with bushy tails, pointed noses and often with lines carved into their backs.
