Alabaster "Chaco Canyon" by Ryan Benally (Navajo)

The beautiful warm tones of Utah alabaster bring this Anasazi woman to life as she stands before a stone cliff dwelling, wearing a ceremonial tablita. Ryan Benally left the edges of the stone with their original texture to show how it appears before being carved. It is set on a base of limestone.

Ryan speaks of this beautiful piece saying, "I was thinking about how the history of Chaco Canyon and of this area is so rich.  Reading and hearing about how local Pueblo dancers go there for summer and winter solstice, and that some Pueblos consider this to be their ancient homeland, made me think about how it must have been for the original dweller who lived there...."
